Your Driving Test

The UK driving test system is designed to ensure that new drivers are competent, knowledgeable, and safe before being granted a full driving licence. It is managed by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), part of the Department for Transport. The system is split into two main parts: the theory test and the practical test.

To begin, learners must be at least 17 years old and hold a provisional driving licence. The theory test must be passed before taking the practical test. It consists of two sections: multiple-choice questions covering road rules and hazard perception clips that assess the candidate's ability to identify and react to developing hazards. Candidates must pass both sections to move forward.

Once the theory test is passed, learners can book their practical driving test. This assesses the driver’s ability to handle a vehicle in various road and traffic conditions. It includes an eyesight check, vehicle safety questions ("show me, tell me"), general driving ability, and a section of independent driving, which may involve following directions from a sat-nav or road signs.

The UK driving test system is known for its strict standards, and many learners require multiple attempts to pass. Learners often benefit from professional driving lessons, which, while not mandatory, significantly improve the chances of passing.
